Have you heard of the high-rise syndrome in cats?
Put simply, skyscraper syndrome is what happens when a cat falls out the window or balcony, usually because it loses its balance while focusing on something like a bird or other animal.
Here’s what you need to know about feline skyscraper syndrome.
Why do cats suffer from high-rise syndrome?
We all know cats have a remarkable sense of balance, so why does skyscraper syndrome come about in the first place?
Well, cases of high rise syndrome can occur when cats end up slipping or when exposed to weather conditions like a sudden gust of wind. Being startled by a loud noise can also lead to high-rise syndrome.
Another reason for high-rise syndrome is that cats have the ability to focus on one thing, such as a bird sitting in a tree that they might consider prey. This can cause a cat to temporarily lose its balance.
What harm can skyscraper syndrome do to a cat?
If a cat has high-rise syndrome, it can sustain serious injury from the height of the fall. While cats can always land on their feet, the impact can cause severe head, spine, and pelvic injuries.
Even if a cat lands and is fine, it may find itself in a new and unfamiliar environment that can cause it to run away and hide.
It is estimated that if a cat falls five or six stories tall, it will almost always be fatal.
When you find a cat suffering from high rise syndrome, it is imperative that you take it to the vet right away.
What can you do to prevent high rise syndrome in cats?
The best way to prevent your cat from getting high rise syndrome is to make sure that you either keep your windows closed or make sure you have secure screens on all open windows.
Check the screens regularly for signs of holes and make sure they are seated properly and cannot loosen or push out.
Additionally, following the ASPCA’s general advice on keeping cats indoors is always a smart move.
