International Sushi Day is on June 18. So you might consider making or ordering a roll to celebrate. Then maybe it is time to ask if we should let our kitties enjoy this delicious dish.
The short answer is that It’s probably best if you don’t share the sushi with your cat.
Cats in children’s books and cartoons usually show us that our beloved cats only eat fresh, raw fish. As anyone who has adopted a cat knows, this is far from the truth.
However, while we prepare to eat International Sushi Day, let’s take a closer look at whether it is safe to share your sushi with your kitten.
How safe is sushi for cats?
Cats are obligatory carnivores, which means they need a diet that is almost entirely protein. Fish is obviously a great source of protein, and many commercial cat foods use fish as their main ingredient.
So a piece of salmon sashimi should be good for your cat, right?
Well not exactly. Some cats are actually allergic to certain types of fish, so this is a warning.
Second, raw fish contains thiaminase, which can break down B vitamins and even cause your kitten to become thiamine deficient.
Just like feeding your cat tuna, you can unknowingly expose your kitten to mercury poisoning depending on the fish used in your sushi.
What about the rice in sushi?
The rice used to make sushi rolls will not poison your cat, but it will not be healthy for them either.
This is mainly because sushi rice is high in sugar and sodium. Also, since rice is a high carbohydrate food, it could set your cat on the path to cat obesity.
Should You Feed Your Cat Sushi?
In short, it’s best to be on the safe side and avoid your cat falling anything off your sushi.
However, if you want to pamper kittens on International Sushi Day, serve them just the smallest bite of sushi and make sure there isn’t any wasabi around.
There may be some safe versions of sushi that you can make for your cat. However, You need to consult your veterinarian first about the ingredients. That is, unless you are a real pro like the guy in the video below.
Of course, you can always apply for an a Fancy Feast with fish flavor, instead, just so your kitten can have their own version of sushi for the vacation.
