Most people were excited to see 2020 draw to a close – but a New England cat named Moose, who has been missing for five years, got off to a particularly ecstatic start to 2021.
On New Years Day, the 12-year-old Siamese cat Moose enjoyed a happy reunion with his human, Kendra Armstrong, five years after he fled and disappeared from the house. They found each other thanks to Midcoast Humane, an animal shelter and rescue facility in Brunswick, Maine.
In December, Kendra had looked at photos of adoptable cats on the shelter’s website and recognized a very familiar face. The cat was called the Elder, but Kendra was sure she saw a photo of her beloved moose. She immediately called the shelter.
“Often people will call in and say, ‘This is my cat,'” says Kate Griffith, marketing and communications manager at Midcoast Humane. “Often it isn’t. We weren’t particularly hopeful. “
But miraculously, the oldest was actually moose! Additionally, he had driven around the shelter a few times in the years since he was lost.
First someone brought the cat as a stray and the shelter called him Piglet. He was adopted twice and returned twice – firstly because the life situation of the adoptee changed, and secondly because he did not fit well into the home. The first adopter renamed Piglet Oldest, and that name stayed.
A goodbye to meow
When Kendra came to the shelter on New Year’s Day to meet the cat she was sure was a moose, he began to meow constantly and wouldn’t leave her side. That’s a good indication that he recognized his original human mother, Kate says.
“It’s a really heartwarming story, and it took place on the first day of 2021,” she says.
In the shelter’s original Facebook post thread about the Moose case on January 5th, Kendra wrote, “I honestly thought he crossed the Rainbow Bridge and I would never see him again. When I found out he was with someone for four years, I couldn’t have been happier to know that he was alive and loved and cared for all the time! “
After seeing them again, Kendra sent the animal shelter this message: “Moose (the oldest) knows that he is finally home and he does NOT want me to let me out of his sight. … I am so grateful to have him at home. “
